Different sized layers in Multiple Exposure

Now I am a big fan of resizing images to put into my more ‘arty’ pieces, which can range from effectively putting a border around the edges to using lots of very small images as a part of a central theme. The above image is a double exposure of some glorious white and blue flowers (please do get in touch if you know which ones!) in the alpine house at RHS Wisley. I have resized the image in the centre because the image was too light for my liking and leaving one layer on it’s own increases that opacity and frames the subject for the viewer.

Below is another image I did a similar structure with but this was in order to provide continuity to the coastline and a splash of colour to a black and white image. For this there were just 2 images combined in photoshop and I put a black and white mask over one layer.

So the above image was made with 3 virtual copies of the same photograph. I changed the size of the layers to create the effect I wanted with the different plants. I have wedded all of the layers together with a texture just to give all of the layers a consistency. I like the idea and the design but I think I would like to retry this with some plants with more colour.

Below is one that is with a lot more colour and made in the RHS Wisley hothouses. I chose a different blend mode for this one and it makes it have a bit more wow factor and given some of the reflections a bit more of a kick. I feel that I have only just started with this type of image - in fact I have only 2! but I would like to explore it much further.

So I have really resized the images in this image here in order to fit into the window frame and this is what makes this image stand out for me. I took this piece by piece and one image at a time. Firstly I made virtual copies of the single snowdrop and added these to photoshop and then resized them to fit exactly in the window frame - then I applied a blend mode. I then saved this and then repeated with the second snowdrop image at the top. I could have put them all in at once but I wasn’t sure where this creation was going and so this was a good way for me to move forward.

The below image I have really gone to town with resizing and I really enjoyed making this as a nod to Klimt’s painting ‘The tree of life’ It consists of a layer of gold, a layer of giant hogweed at sunset and many layers of a pain au raison!!! I placed the virtual copies of my breakfast pastry in various different places around the base of the giant hogweed.

Have you ever resized your images in a Multiple Exposure? Is it something you enjoy doing? Do share your images with me! If you want to have a go but don’t know quite where to get started then do grab a place on one of my courses HERE.
